Uncle Tom’s Cabin As It Is is an example of the anti-Tom or
pro-slavery plantation literature genre
, novels that were produced following the publication of the bestselling Uncle Tom’s Cabin by abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe. Critics felt Stowe’s work inaccurately depicted or otherwise exaggerated the evils of slaveholding.
Smith’s novel follows the general pattern of most anti-Tom novels: a story of loyal slaves convinced to leave their benign masters by abolitionists who did not really care about their welfare. Like several of the genre, Smith also references
Uncle Tom’s Cabin
throughout, both in title and in plot.
I have not read it, but I am going to guess it has
the
‘N’ word
in it [common at the time]
Plot –
Smith’s novel begins on a plantation in Virginia,
owned by the benevolent and kindly Mr. Erskine. Among his slaves is Uncle Tom (Smith’s version of Stowe’s character), who is convinced to run away by an abolitionist schoolteacher from the North. The teacher is portrayed as envious of the prosperity of Erskine and seeks to ruin him by convincing his slaves to desert the plantation.
As Tom’s journey continues, the man realizes that the abolitionist who are “helping” him wish to enslave him for their own ends. After being abused and mistreated in Illinois, after attempting to return home, Tom finally ends up in Canada. Erskine is waiting there to “rescue” Tom from his freedom and to take him back to “good old Virginia”.
Makes me wonder, were slave owners reading this to their slaves???
Condition:
Please
zoom in on
photos carefully
as they are part of the description. I am human and sometimes miss a thing or 2, but I
try to mention the book’s main faults.
all of my books are VERY OLD and have 100+ years of wear to varying degrees
excellent condition….
for its age:
boards –
very secure, boards are nearly perfect!
textblock
– pages very secure / 1 slightly proud signature
outer joints
–  very good
spine
– backed with a new spine [nicely done!] / paper label reads the title, author, and 1852 on it [ If I were keeping it, I would invest in a nicer label] / spine has a line going down it when opened, but it doesn’t look near as bad when the book is closed
tips
– very good, bottom front very slight wear that was touched up
inner hinges
– pretty good, not perfect, by no means ugly either
pages
– generally very clean – worse spots shown in picture 7 – just a few other light and small spots!
writing
– very light pencil inscription on the ffep
rips /folds
– 1 rip that I saw / no folds / 1 very, very, tiny piece missing to the edge of the front ad in margin area
other:
– a good and solid sturdy book – looks almost new!
